Dental Crowns (Caps)
A crown (or cap) is a covering that encases the entire tooth surface restoring it to its original shape and size.
There are different factors that may contribute to erosion, cracking and breaking of your teeth, such as age, fillings or tooth decay. In cosmetic dentistry, crowns are used to solve these kinds of problems. Dental crowns cover the entire surface of the affected tooth adding strength, durability and stability.
Basically, there are three types of crowns: those made out of metal ideal for the back teeth; porcelain, recommended for front teeth; and porcelain fused with metal that are strong and have a natural appearance.
Dental Crowns can help to improve the appearance and health of your teeth, and they provide protection for future cracks or tooth decay.
Dental Crowns Implementation and Treatment Procedure
A crown procedure usually involves two short visits. During your first visit, we will prepare the tooth by removing any decay and building a healthy foundation to support the crown. Next, we will take impressions from which the crown is made. A temporary crown is placed until the permanent one is ready.
Within two weeks, you will return to have your temporary crown removed and your new crown placed. The porcelain crown will protect your tooth however as with all procedures, proper home care and regular dental visits will help prolong the life of your new crown.
