Sport & Night Guards in Dunnville

A sport guard, custom-fitted by your dentist, can help significantly reduce the risk of dental injuries. Sport, leisure and recreation activities are the most common cause of dental injuries.

Why is it important to have custom-fit mouth guards?

Our office can make a custom-fitted mouth guardsthat offers far more protection, comfort and cushioning (shock absorption)than standard varieties. Given standard mouthguards don’t fit as accurately as a custom-made sport guard, they are often uncomfortable and can interfere with an individual’s breathing and speaking ability.

Procedure for a Custom-Fitted Sport Guard

A custom-fitted sport guard is made by a dentist using an impression taken of your teeth and a plaster model. Custom fitting allows the dentist to accurately assess your mouth and provide the best fit, size coverage and thickness in a sport guard especially for you. The dentist can also make an assessment of any risk factors you might have and recommend the best type of sport guard appropriate for your sport.

Night Guards and Sports Guards General Safety Tips

You will be guided by your dentist, general suggestions include:

  • Ensure you wear the sport guard at all times during games and training sessions.
  • Players undergoing dental treatment can have a custom-fitted sport guard made to fit comfortably and accurately over their braces.
  • See your dentist if the sport guard starts to feel uncomfortable or doesn’t fit well.

Your dentist should review your sport guard every 12 months to ensure it is fitting correctly. Usually, a well-maintained adult’s sport guard should last for many years.

Custom-Fitted Night Guard

A night guard is a horseshoe-shaped, retainer-like, plastic appliance with shallow borders that can be worn on either the top or the bottom arch. It is designed to protect the teeth from the pressure of clenching and grinding (bruxism) by providing a protective cushion between the upper and lower teeth.

Since most of the damage typically caused by bruxism is during sleep, a night guard can usually be made prevent the patient from grinding their teeth together and causing further damage.

Children often grind their teeth when their teeth are erupting. This is not uncommon, nor is it a problem if it is mild. However, more severe cases can lead to a malocclusion (misaligned teeth). Malocclusion generally leads to a need for Orthodontics or the child can develop temporomandibular joint (TMJ) problems (jaw joint popping or sensitivity).

Procedure for a Custom-Fitted Night Guard

To custom fit your mouth guard individually, ensuring the most comfort and best fit and protection, we will take an impression of your teeth and then the dental lab will mold the mouth guard over the model using a special material.

Generally, mouth guards cover the upper teeth only, but all cases are unique and a lower mouth guard might be the best option. An effective mouth guard should be comfortable, resist tears, be durable and easy to clean, and should not restrict your breathing or speech.
